Kokernag is a charming and tranquil town located in the Anantnag district of Jammu and Kashmir. It is renowned for its natural spring, botanical garden, and picturesque surroundings, making it one of the most visited tourist spots in South Kashmir. The name “Kokernag” is believed to be derived from two words: “Koker” meaning chicken and “Nag” meaning spring—in reference to the way the spring water splits and flows in multiple directions, resembling a hen’s claw.

At the heart of Kokernag lies the Kokernag Spring, known for its crystal-clear and mineral-rich water, believed to have medicinal properties. The spring flows through beautifully maintained Mughal-style gardens, which are lined with tall chinar trees, vibrant flowerbeds, and lush green lawns. The sound of flowing water and the fresh mountain air create a soothing and refreshing experience for visitors.

Kokernag is also home to one of the largest trout fish farms in Asia, where tourists can see fish breeding and even enjoy fresh trout dishes. The nearby Botanical Garden, maintained by the Jammu and Kashmir Tourism Department, showcases a variety of Himalayan flora and is perfect for nature lovers and photographers.

Located about 70 km from Srinagar and 25 km from Anantnag, Kokernag is easily accessible by road. The best time to visit is from April to October, when the flowers are in full bloom and the weather is pleasant. Autumn adds a golden hue to the landscape, while winter transforms the area into a serene snowy retreat.
