Sonamarg, meaning the “Meadow of Gold”, is a stunning hill station located in the Ganderbal district of Jammu and Kashmir, around 80 kilometers northeast of Srinagar. Nestled at an altitude of approximately 2,730 meters (8,960 feet) above sea level, Sonamarg is surrounded by snow-covered peaks, alpine meadows, and glistening glaciers. It serves as a gateway to the majestic Himalayan ranges and is renowned for its raw, untouched natural beauty.

In spring and summer, Sonamarg transforms into a lush green valley blanketed with wildflowers and bordered by thick forests of fir and pine. The valley is crisscrossed by gushing streams and rivers, including the Sindh River, which is ideal for trout fishing and white-water rafting. Sonamarg is also a popular destination for trekkers and adventure enthusiasts, offering base points for several famous treks such as the Thajiwas Glacier trek, Krishansar Lake, and Vishansar Lake treks.

One of the most popular attractions in Sonamarg is the Thajiwas Glacier, located just a few kilometers away. It remains snow-covered even in summer and can be reached via pony rides or short hikes. The glacier, with its icy slopes and snow bridges, is perfect for snow play, photography, and experiencing snowfall even during warmer months.

Sonamarg also holds strategic and spiritual significance. It serves as the starting point for the Amarnath Yatra, one of the most sacred pilgrimages in Hinduism. The Baltal base camp, located near Sonamarg, is one of the key routes for pilgrims heading to the holy Amarnath Cave.

During winter, Sonamarg is usually covered in heavy snow and remains cut off due to road closures, but in warmer months (May to October), it turns into a paradise for tourists, campers, and nature lovers. The scenic views of towering mountains, tranquil lakes, and blooming valleys make Sonamarg one of the most enchanting destinations in Kashmir.
